As we venture into the fall season, I start to think about soups and comfort foods...they warm us and prepare us for that long winter season that may lie ahead. What is your comfort food? What do you crave this time of year as we transition?
I can give you my favorite...(actually I have it all year long)...Bone broth! This nutrient dense broth is very healing and incredibly important for our bodies to stay nourished and healthly. Bone broth is in a league of its own, your store bought brands do not even come close to the nutrient rich bone broth!Ya wanna know the best part....it is so very cost effective! It is one of the best ways to get nutrient rich minerals, vitamins, healthy fats and proteins!
Bone broth is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and other trace minerals. The minerals in broth are easily absorbed by the body. Bone broth even contains glucosamine and chondroiton – which are thought to help mitigate the deletorious effects of arthritis and joint pain. Gelatin is an inexpensive source of supplementary protein. Gelatin also shows promise in the fight against degenerative joint disease. It helps to support the connective tissue in your body and also helps the fingernails and hair to grow well and strong.
You ask..What do i do with it? Bone broth can be used as your soup stock, braise your vegetables, or baste your meats with it....or better yet, pour a mug full, add a dash of celtic sea salt, and a tab of organic grass fed butter (loaded with Butyric Acid..short-chain saturated fatty acid that is produced by our gut flora and is used for energy by our colon. It has now been found to be a major contributor to a healthy metabolism and helps controling our blood lipids and our insulin sensitivity....more to come in another post!!) and warm yourself up and boost your immune system!
I continually have a crock pot going in my house, one of my favorite recipes from Nourished Kitchen, click here, gives great instructions on how to begin your own bone broth at home!
